Meet Hilda!

Northwest of Guatemala City lies the city of San Juan Sacatepéquez, home to Hilda and her parents. Hilda has been in the Luminarias program for eight years. Now in her third year of university, she studies social work with the goal of returning home to serve her community after graduation. “My community has had many problems for a long time,” Hilda says. “At times, I feel powerless to do anything. However, I am preparing myself to be able to achieve some goals and projects for my community.”

Hilda’s studies have reshaped her perspective. “Social work is a very rewarding career, and it has had a profound impact on me. It has changed my way of thinking, how I perceive things, and how I think about the future.”

Luminarias has equipped Hilda to make a difference. “Luminarias has been a great support for me and has had a huge impact. Without Luminarias, I would not have been able to continue studying; I would not be here pursuing a university degree, I would be at home working like most young people are doing.”

Hilda has blossomed over the past eight years from a girl with big dreams into a bold, compassionate young woman forging her own path. As graduation approaches, she looks ahead with confidence and hope, ready to turn her training into projects that will create new possibilities and a brighter future for the people of San Juan Sacatepéquez.
