Remembering Hugh McElroy

Founder of Luminarias, 1938 – 2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our beloved founder, Hugh McElroy, who entered eternal rest on August 12, 2025, at the age of 87. Hugh’s life was marked by faith, service, and an unwavering commitment to the dignity and potential of every person.

In 2014, at the age of 75, Hugh founded Luminarias to provide a safe, nurturing home and educational opportunities for adolescent Indigenous girls in Guatemala. What began with fifteen girls in a rented home has grown into a thriving community where young women learn, grow, and shine. Known affectionately in Guatemala as “Papa Hugh,” he was a mentor, advocate, and friend—investing his time, resources, and heart into the lives of those the world too often overlooks.

Hugh’s vision was rooted in the belief that one should use their blessings to do good while still alive. His own life reflected this calling, from his early years in Minnesota, to a long career with 3M, to the many mission trips and personal relationships that deepened his compassion and sense of purpose. Those who knew him will remember his quiet wisdom, his steadfast encouragement, and his favorite reminder in challenging times: “The light is still burning.”

Though he is no longer with us, the light of Luminarias continues to shine through the dozens of young women whose lives have been transformed by his courage and generosity. We are honored to carry his mission forward and invite you to read more about Hugh’s remarkable life and legacy at this link.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts in Hugh’s memory be made to Luminarias at www.luminariasproject.com/donate as a meaningful way to keep his light burning brightly for future generations. His life is beautifully reflected in the more than 100 young women whose futures were shaped by the Luminarias Project, as well as in the dedication of its staff and board. He will be greatly missed, yet his light will continue to guide us.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 19 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., at O’Halloran and Murphy Funeral Home, 575 S. Snelling Avenue, St. Paul, MN 55116.

The Funeral Mass will take place Wednesday, August 20, at 11:00 a.m., at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, 1938 Stanford Ave, St Paul, MN 55105.

With gratitude for his life and legacy,
Anne Bartel
Board President, Luminarias
