Honoring Hugh McElroy — 10 Years of Light |

Dear Friend,
We write today with deep gratitude and heartfelt reflection. Hugh McElroy, beloved founder of Luminarias, now resides in an assisted living facility and is receiving special care as he continues this chapter of life at age 87. His spirit remains strong, and his heart is filled with the same humility and hope that inspired him to begin this journey ten years ago.
At 75, Hugh answered a calling that would change countless lives. Trading corporate success for service, he traveled to Guatemala and founded Luminarias—a place where Indigenous girls could pursue education, dignity, and a future filled with possibility. With nothing more than a rented house, his life savings, and a dream, Hugh created not just a home, but a movement. |
Ten years later, that dream has flourished. What began with 15 girls has grown into a permanent program preparing young women for university and careers, equipping them to lead their families and communities with confidence. And while Hugh has stepped back from day-to-day operations, a committed Board of Directors continues to carry his vision forward.

When Hugh McElroy was in good health, he traveled regularly to Guatemala to contribute to the vision he had created for Luminarias. |
Today, Luminarias is a permanent and growing sanctuary of hope in San Lucas Sacatepéquez. Hugh’s fire—the one that drove him to give with an open hand—burns now in every graduate, every staff member, and every donor who believes, as he did, in a better world led by educated, empowered women. Let’s honor him the way he has always honored others—with kindness, faith, and unwavering belief in what is possible. With gratitude, Anne Bartel President, Board of Directors P.S. If you would like to send Hugh a message of encouragement or remembrance during this time, please email me directly. |
