Lighting the Way: Empowering Young Women in Guatemala Through Education |

Dear Friend,
At Luminarias, our young women find their footing more easily in their second year. Mariana, Evelyn, and Marelyn (pictured above) recently shared how much more settled they feel, as being away from their families has become their new norm. Their parents' encouragement and the unwavering support from Luminarias staff have made a significant difference. They know they can turn to Sergio, Wendy, Victoria, and Mary for academic help, guidance, or simply a listening ear when they need it.
With time, their knowledge of potential careers is expanding, and some are beginning to dream differently. Mariana, who once aspired to be a policewoman, now wants to study agronomy. She is eager to learn how to grow food and care for animals—especially horses, her favorite! Evelyn remains steadfast in her dream of becoming a nurse, even as she discovers new career options. |
Only about 60% of girls in Guatemala complete primary school, and even fewer advance to secondary education. |
Meanwhile, Marelyn is still drawn to law enforcement but is also exploring the idea of opening a restaurant. Another option for her is launching a boutique to sell her own designs, or even establishing a small factory using recycled materials to help the environment.
These young women are daring to dream bigger because of the opportunities education provides. But for so many girls in Guatemala, access to education remains out of reach. Less than 30% of poor, rural indigenous girls are enrolled in secondary school, highlighting pronounced ethnic and socioeconomic inequalities. Investing in girls' education doesn’t just change individual lives—it uplifts entire communities. When girls receive an education, they gain the skills and confidence to pursue meaningful careers, advocate for their rights, and contribute to the economic and social well-being of their families. Ensuring that every girl has the chance to learn is not just an act of empowerment—it is a necessity for building a more just and equitable society.

Education is a critical pathway to breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering economic independence for girls in Guatemala. |
